Lead Service Line Replacement Program

Replacing your Lead Service Line

The most effective way to reduce exposure to lead from drinking water is removing your lead or galvanized steel service lines. If PVWC’s records indicate that you have a lead or galvanized steel service line, PVWC or PVWC’s Contractor Pacific Construction will contact you to schedule a replacement. You can check to see if you have a lead or galvanized steel service line by clicking here. You must register for the program by digitally signing a right of entry form linked here. If you live in the city of Clifton, Passaic, Paterson or Prospect Park, and have a lead or galvanized steel service line, replacing your service line is FREE and REQUIRED by law.

Once the pipe is replaced and water is back on, it is important to turn on all the cold faucets in your building for 30 min. This will flush all the water pipes in your building. Start with the faucet at the lowest level and work your way up to the highest level. After 30 minutes of flushing the cold water, shut off all faucets, starting at the highest point and working your way down.

The lead or galvanized steel service line on your property will be replaced with a new copper service line. The water to your home will be shut off during the time of construction.  The replacement process will take about one day to complete. To get to the pipes underground, the contractor and crew will dig up to two 4 foot by 4 foot areas–one in the street and one at the curb in the area near the test hole. Depending on where your pipe is located, the contractor may also have to dig a small hole near the foundation of your house. The contractor will need to enter your home to complete the pipe replacement. Once construction is finished, the contractor tests the new pipe and runs water through it to flush out debris and any remaining lead particles.
